Ras y Cerrig Glas 2018.

The sun just about managed to come out for the 1st of two races on the weekend of June 16th and 17th. We’d decided to put the tent up as the weather wasn’t great in the morning, and must have put a lot of kids off from coming as only 4 hardy youngsters turned up. They thoroughly enjoyed it however and it could be the start of their running careers.

1st home in the 0.35mile ‘chase’ was u/8 Isaac TEBBUTT- 3.13; 2nd Hari-Jac WATKINS u/5- 3.45; 3rd Deian WATKINS u/5 – 4.31; and Izzy TEBBUTT u/5 – 4.50. They enjoyed their just deserves, sweets and a certificate.

The main 7 mile race saw 16 entrants take on the 7miler. In my opinion it’s one of the best race routes out there. Ok, it may not have big steep climbs, but the terrain is second to none. Carn Alw, a favourite of mine, is a beauty and all the runners have to run right to the rocky top on the Preselis northern flanks. From there the route meanders it’s way through the boggy bits to take on the iron aged hill fort, Foel Drygarn. It also marks the halfway point, and turnaround. It then sort of follows the golden road, but meanders it’s way through bluestone country before heading round and up to summit Carn Sian. From the summit they run through the aircraft memorial site before plunging back down the last steep decent to the finish.

Andrew, Tomos and Heddwyn led the pack, and it was the same finishing order as the previous Tuesday evening’s race in that Andrew finished ahead of Tomos, who in turn finished ahead of Heddwyn.

Aberyswyth AC runner, and newbie to my races, Diane Bruckner took the ladies win, but the amazing F60 Hazel Davies wasn’t that far behind to be second lady overall!.

All runners enjoyed tea and cake at the end, and category prize winners enjoyed their prizes. beer! Some of which were donated by Domi Kimber from Mantle brewery. Thanks to Dyfed, Pantithel farm for allowing us to use the area.

The weather wasn’t playing it’s best for this one, and it’s the first time we’ve had bad weather on one of my races. Not bad as I’ve been organising races for the last 6 years! Really bad visibility and heavy drizzle! All 17 starters made it round the marked course, without getting too lost! Remarkable really as some of it is over rough ground!

Andrew and Tomos had another battle, and Andrew again protected last years podium spot and finished 28 seconds ahead of Tomos. Alec had a battle for third with 1st female Shan Jones who is returning to form. Her coaching sessions must be paying off, as she broke the female record!!! There were a few new runners, and longest travelled were Black Pear joggers Megan and Ryan who came back beaming. A few of the newbies loved the ‘Wall of death’ hill. “I’ve never had to go up anything that steep before, it’s insane!”

Huge thanks to those who ran, the marshals for enduring the weather, Rosebush development committee for helping out making tea and cake in their new shed, and to Daniel from Wadworth brewery for supplying the prizes, more beer!

Thanks to the four amigos who ran in all the three races- Andrew Hughes, Tomos Morgans, Marc ‘Beaso’ Beasley, and Martin Harris. True men of the mountains!

Monies raised from the three events go to relevant fundraising in those communities- Newport path clearing group, Mynachlog-ddu playground, and Rosebush development committee.

Thanks all, see you for the Beast next year on May 11th 2019.
